Qualitative Research in Oral Health Course

The CORE project’s Brazilian team successfully organised a five-day first face-to-face course titled “Qualitative Research in Oral Health” the course was held between 28th March to 9th May 2025 at the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil. This course was conducted as part of the training and capacity building initiative under the NIHR Global Health Group on Oral Health: The CORE Programme.

Course Objectives

  • To address the basic characteristics of qualitative research in health

  • To discuss the potential contributions of qualitative research to the field of health

  • To discuss the development of a qualitative research project, which includes the preparation of interview tools (individual and group) and data analysis

Participant Profile

The course was attended by various stakeholders, including:

  • Professors at Local Universities

  • Oral Health Professionals from the Public Health Service

  • Final Year Undergraduate Dental Students

  • CORE Team Brazil

Main Outcomes Observed

The course was essential in demystifying the field of qualitative research for those already working in research.

For graduating students and public health professionals, the course promoted engagement, and this group felt encouraged to seek mentoring and, if possible, to apply for a Master’s programme.

Course Evaluation

The feedback from attendees was positive. The majority stated that the course exceeded their expectations, provided an in depth introduction to the subject and, featured a clear and coherent methodological approach. All attendees stated that they would like to attend future courses in the series.
