Fédération Dentaire Internationale World Dental Congress, 12 – 15 September 2024 Istanbul, Türkiye

Professor Abhishek Mehta of Jamia Millia Islamia University and India lead of the CORE project presented a scientific paper at the annual FDI World Dental Congress held in Istanbul, Türkiye from 12-15 September 2024. He showcased the results of a survey conducted to assess the training needs of early-career dental public health researchers in India and Nepal. Professor Manu Mathur of Queen Mary University of London was the co-presenter of this scientific paper.

Professor Mehta highlighted the importance of this survey in developing the upcoming ambitious training and capacity building program under the mandate of the NIHR Global Health Group on Oral Health (The CORE Programme). The overarching aim is to develop oral health research capacity amongst young dental public health practitioners in these two LMIC countries (India and Nepal) to achieve the 2030 ambition of ensuring high-quality oral health care is available, affordable and accessible to all. Sixty-eight dental public health specialists participated in this survey. Participants marked hands-on implementation of topics like community engagement, qualitative research and academic writing as the highest priority for further training. This survey highlighted key gaps in training and the knowledge of dental public health researchers in these countries.
